If your property is off the gas main, propane is what runs the house — and finding someone who genuinely knows propane is harder than it should be.
Plenty of HVAC companies will sell you a furnace and then tell you the fuel connection is somebody else’s job. Forward Mechanical is a TSSA-registered fuels contractor first. The line from your regulator, the furnace, the venting and every appliance downstream are handled by our own licensed technicians. One crew, one company standing behind the whole system.
We work the rural end of Durham every week. We know which roads the gas main will never reach, and we don’t treat a service call out past the concession roads as an inconvenience.
Propane Furnace Installation, Repair & Replacement
New propane furnace installation
Sized to your home and how you actually use it — not sized to whatever the last contractor left behind. High-efficiency equipment, correct venting, and a proper startup before we leave.
Propane furnace repair
No heat is an emergency out here, where the nearest alternative is a long drive. We run 24/7 emergency service and we carry the parts that fail most often.
Annual maintenance and safety checks
Propane equipment needs the same annual attention as anything else — burner, heat exchanger, venting and gas pressure checked and documented.
Propane boilers and hydronic heating
Radiant floors, baseboard and hydronic systems running on propane, installed and serviced.
Pairing with a heat pump
A cold-climate heat pump running alongside a propane furnace lets the heat pump carry the shoulder seasons and the furnace take over when it gets serious. Worth a conversation if you’re replacing equipment anyway.
Propane Appliance Hookups & Gas Fitting
Once the fuel is on the property, everything else becomes possible. We run the lines and make the connections:
- Propane water heaters — tank and tankless
- Garage and shop heaters — the most common call we get from rural properties
- Fireplaces and inserts
- Ranges and cooktops
- BBQ and patio heater lines — no more swapping cylinders
- Standby generator connections
- Line extensions and relocations for renovations and additions
All of it inspected, to code, and done by the same licensed technicians who handle our natural gas work.
Pool and spa heaters A propane pool heater turns a six-week swimming season into something closer to five months, and it’s one of the few upgrades people actually notice every day they use it.
We handle the fuel side properly: a line sized for the heater’s demand on top of everything else the property already runs. Undersized supply is the most common reason a pool heater underperforms, and it’s usually because the line was run for the house and the heater was added to it afterward without anyone recalculating the load.
If you’re installing new, talk to us before the heater is chosen — the sizing conversation is much cheaper before the trench is dug than after.
This trips people up, so here’s the plain version. Your propane supplier owns the tank, fills it, and is responsible for the tank and its regulator. Everything from there into your home — the line, the appliances, the venting and the equipment — is licensed gas fitting work, and that’s us.
If you’re not sure where the boundary sits on your property, call and describe what you’ve got. We’ll tell you straight whether it’s our job or a call to your supplier, and we won’t book a truck for something they’re obligated to handle for free.
New Builds, Additions & Rural Properties
Building or renovating off the gas main means the propane system gets designed in, not bolted on afterward. We work with homeowners and builders on the whole fuel side: line sizing for everything you plan to run now and later, appliance locations, venting paths and the mechanical rough-in.
The mistake we get called in to fix most often is a line sized for the furnace and nothing else — then the shop heater goes in three years later and the whole thing has to be reworked. Sizing for what you’ll eventually want costs very little at rough-in and a great deal afterward.

Why Forward Mechanical for Propane Work
Fuels contractor first
The gas and propane side is never subcontracted. It’s the trade the company was built on, and it’s the part most HVAC outfits hand off.
Licensed and certified
TSSA-registered fuels contractor. Every technician on a propane job holds current certification for the work they’re doing.
